This week we want to draw our atttention to the Jewish High Holy Days. These are Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and the days between, known as the days of Awe. While most of the church around the world recognize the holidays within the Gregorian calendar, the Jewish people and some in the church have found that by being tuned spiritually to the Jewish calendar God speaks to them around the Jewish holidays. Though many in the church hear from God during the tradtional western calendar, I have found a strong flow of the prophetic and spiritual activity around Rosh Hashanah. For the last few years the ACPE (Apostilic Council of Prophetic Elders) has met during this season and we have had great clarity of revelation.

So I encourage you to put up your spirital antenna and see what God may want to share with you during this season. These are the days He set in place and the times and seasons that were established by Him. Too many times we get caught up in the western (greek) mind set of living and we forget the G-d set times and seasons according to His desire and not ours. I encourage you to press into the Lord during the next 10 Days of Awe.

Below I have included some basic information on these High Holy Days. This infomation is just an overview and not an extensive teaching. There are many great sources on the web so I encourage you to do a study to learn more about these holidays and seasons. I have also included a link to a prayer guide developed by Sarah Lowe, the South Central Area Leader for the www.nationaldayofprayer.org. I want to share a part of her letter to me concerning this prayer guide and the seasons we are headed in to:

I am by no means an authority but these past few weeks as I compiled the attached guide, I felt excited by what the Lord is giving us. He has set in place the most holy season for us to come to His Throne right here in the midst of major chaos in the world.

There are lots of prayer guides going around right now.. most of them focused on the election – 40 Days… I Praise God for that and really did not want to add to all the cacophony but I have to obey! What I sense in my spirit is that the Lord has given us this time to press in to His Holiness in Repentance and He will hear from heaven and heal our land! His Word is still true, His Feasts are still powerful no matter what is happening in the US stock market or in Washington DC!!

Please feel free to use this guide with your prayer partners as the Lord leads. This information is being sent out to the NDP network and will be released nationally by Sara Ballenger of the Capitol Hill Prayer Partners on Sunday.

Feast of Trumpets ~ Rosh Hashanah 5769
23 The LORD said to Moses, 24 "Say to the Israelites: 'On the first day of the seventh month you are to have a day of rest, a sacred assembly commemorated with trumpet blasts. 25 Do no regular work, but present an offering made to the LORD by fire.' " Lev 23: 23-25
Rosh Hashanah is the first and second days of the first Jewish month of Tishrei. It marks the beginning of the Jewish new year. The celebration of this holiday is marked with solemnity, as it is the day on which the whole world is judged for the coming year. Rosh Hashanah is also known as Yom Teru’ah, the “Feast of Trumpets” (the name was changed during Talmudic times). Tradition states that the universe was created by the LORD on Rosh Hashanah (or on Elul 25, so that Rosh Hashanah marks the sixth day of creation, when the LORD created Adam and Eve). Every year, on this day, we proclaim G-d as our one and true King.

The Torah portion for the first day of Rosh Hashanah is about the birth of Issac, and the portion for the second day is on the Akedah, or the binding of Issac. Abraham's supreme test of faith -- his binding of Isaac in preparation to sacrifice him as per G-d's command -- is believed to have taken place on the 1st of Tishrei of the year 2084 from creation (1677 BCE), and is recalled each Rosh Hashanah with the sounding of the shofar (ram's horn -- a ram was sacrificed in Isaac's stead when an angel revealed that the command to sacrifice Isaac was but a divine test); the Torah's account of the event is publicly read in the synagogue on the 2nd day of Rosh Hashanah.

This year, (2007-2008 / 5769) Rosh Hashanah began on Monday evening, September 30, 2008 at sundown, and continues through sundown on Wednesday, October 1, 2008.

Yom Kippur 2008 starts at sundown on Wednesday October 8 (Kol Nidre), and lasts all day Thursday, October 9, 2008 until sundown. This day marks the culmination of the Days of Awe, the period between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The Day of Atonement is described by Maimonides as "the universal time of repentance" (z'man teshuva lakol). It is spent praying and fasting.

Yom Kippur is mentioned biblically in Leviticus 23: 26-32. A whole tractate of the Babylonian Talmud is dedicated to Yom Kippur (Yoma). In the Code of Jewish Law (Shulhan Aruch), the laws of Yom Kippur begin in Orach Chaim chapter 604.

The tradition of wearing white on Yom Kippur

There is a tradition to wear white on both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, though today you will find many only adhering to the tradition on Yom Kippur. The tradition stems from several concepts.

White signifies the color of mercy, and on Yom Kippur we pray for mercy.
The angels "wear white" figuratively, and on Yom Kippur the congregation of Israel fasts and prays like the angels.
White is the color of purity, and the Day of Atonement itself brings spiritual purification.
