This week we will focus our PrayerStorm efforts on two different international storms. One of these is Hurricane Ike which is striking with force in the Cuba and is now heading toward the Gulf Coast of the United States. The other is the conflict which as been taking place as Russia still has troops within the sovereign nation of Georgia. Let's speak peace to these storms.

On a personal note, my wife Michal Ann was to weak to see the doctor today so I went to see the oncologist this afternoon. Things are in motion now for the next step of professional nursing to come to the home maybe three times a week. Qualified nurses will come into the home and evaluate her present condition this Wednesday and then give recommendations of where we go from here. This is not the news we were hoping for, but perhaps with good help she can regain strength and resume some form of cancer treatment.

I want to make you aware that Oct 5th is the Day to Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem 2008. We will make this our prayer focus the week of this event, but I encourage you to check out the website and set aside this date. Also this month we are approaching the Days of Awe on Sept 29 - Oct 9, 2008, This is the time of the Jewish new year - Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur the day of atonement. We will send out a focused time for prayer of consecration during these days.

HAVANA (AP) -- Hurricane Ike roared south of Cuba's densely populated capital of fragile, aging buildings Tuesday after tearing across the island nation, ravaging homes, killing at least four people and forcing 1.2 million to evacuate.

Residents in Texas and northern Mexico braced for a weekend hit from Ike, which has already killed at least 79 people in the Caribbean.

Winds howled and heavy rains fell across Havana, where streets were empty Tuesday morning. Towering waves broke over the graceful Malecon seaside promenade, which police barricaded off late Monday. Many of the historic apartment buildings along its length are in poor repair and vulnerable to collapse.

Police spread out across the city to halt all but emergency and official traffic. Roadways were strewn with tree branches and rocks, and the rubble from crumbling balconies littered sidewalks. Navigation was banned in Havana Bay, its usually placid surface stirred up by white-capped waves.

"The truth is, we are scared," said Nancy Nazal, who lives on the second floor of a high-rise apartment building overlooking the ocean...

Russia to Keep Troops in Georgia Breakaway Regions

MOSCOW —  Russia said Tuesday that it will station troops in two Georgian breakaway provinces for the foreseeable future, reaffirming its plans less than 24 hours after agreeing to pull forces from Georgian areas around Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that a Russian military presence was necessary to prevent Georgian attempts to regain control of the separatist regions.

"Russian troops will remain on the territory of South Ossetia and Abkhazia on request of their leaders in parliament," he said at a briefing. "They will remain there for a long time. Their presence there will be needed at least for the foreseeable future to prevent any relapses of aggressive actions."... >>Click Here<< for more of this article.

Cheney says Georgia's territory must remain intact

ROME —  Vice President Dick Cheney insisted Tuesday that Georgia's territorial integrity must be respected, after Russia announced it would keep a military presence in two Georgian breakaway provinces and moved to establish diplomatic ties with them.

Cheney said the international community was united in condemning Russia's military action in Georgia and "its unilateral efforts to alter by force of arms Georgia's internationally recognized boundaries."

"The international community supports the independence and territorial integrity of Georgia and calls for the peaceful resolution of this dispute based on good-faith discussions among the parties," Cheney said, after holding talks with Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi in Rome.

Russia and Georgia fought for five days last month over the separatist region of South Ossetia. Moscow has since recognized South Ossetia and another breakaway region, Abkhazia.

On Tuesday, Russia signed a deal to establish diplomatic relations with the two separatist regions and said it would keep thousands of troops in the regions to prevent Georgian attempts to regain control of them.... >>Click Here<< for more of this article.

 

Sarkozy to Demand Russian Pullout From Georgia

MOSCOW —  French President Nicolas Sarkozy was heading to Moscow on Monday on the difficult mission of persuading Russia to honor its pledge to withdraw troops from Georgia.

Nearly a month after a truce negotiated by Sarkozy ended a five-day war between Russia and Georgia, Russian troops remain entrenched deep inside Georgian territory. Georgia and the West have accused Russia of failing to honor its pledge to withdraw its troops to positions held before the fighting broke out Aug. 7.
But Russia says those troops are peacekeepers and that they are allowed under the accord to help maintain security around Georgia's breakaway provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Moscow has recognized the two regions as independent states. Sarkozy has been criticized for giving the Russians too much room for interpretation in the peace deal signed Aug. 12, and his diplomatic blitz to Moscow and Tbilisi on Monday may be his last chance to save it — as well as his own credibility as a peacemaker.

Sarkozy, whose country holds the European Union presidency, is leading a delegation that includes European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana.... >>Click Here<< for more of this article.
