The Little Keys of Revival

1) A Definition of Revival – What Is It Anyway?
What is this thing called revival? Let’s lay a proper foundation by looking at some definitions.
Definitions of Revival from Webster’s Dictionary
1. Return, recall or recovery to life from death or apparent death; as the revival of a drowned person. (Revival brings something back to life that is either now dead or seemingly dead. Revival is not something that has never lived at all.)
2. Return or recall to activity from a state of languor; as the revival of spirits. Revival brings a holy shock to apathy and carelessness (Read Isaiah 64:1-3).
3. Recall, return or recovery from a state of neglect, oblivion, obscurity or depression as the revival of letters or learning. (Revival restores truth and recalls to obedience that which has been forgotten.)
4. Renewed and more active attention to religion, an awakening of men to their spiritual concerns.
2) Some Foundational Truths
Are your salivary glands getting whetted yet? Are you thirsting for more of Him? Then muse on these following truths and I promise you will truly be aching on the insides like I do for “More, Lord!”
Revival is the restoration to life, vigor and or to strengthen something that appears to be dead or is dead. Revival takes that thing that appears to be dead, so that it will be operative or valid again. Revival is necessary to counteract spiritual decline and to create spiritual momentum once again.
Revival includes the conversion of a large number of people in a relatively short period of time. It has been called the wave that carries the faith from generation to generation. When revival reaches its fullness it stirs:
a. The individual, which impacts
b. The family, which revives
c. A congregation to spread unity, inspiration, and the fire of God to influence
d. The church in a city or region; which then in turn
e. Releases societal change where the Kingdom of God comes on earth
Yes, Revival is the hunger for change. It is an extraordinary move of the Holy Spirit producing extraordinary results. It is an outright invasion of heaven that brings the conscious awareness of God on earth.
Charles Finney stated that revival is nothing more than a new beginning
of obedience to the Word of God. A.W. Tozer remarked that revival is
that which changes the moral climate of a community. We could thus conclude that it is a work of the Holy Spirit among His own people...
What we call revival is simply New Testament Christianity - the saints getting back to normal.
I heard a message by the church historian, J. Edwin Orr, before he graduated to his heavenly reward on The Role of Prayer in Spiritual Awakening. In his stirring straight talk message he stated that a spiritual awakening is a “movement” of the Holy Spirit bringing about a revival of New Testament Christianity in the church of Christ and it’s related community. This activity accomplishes the reviving of the church, the awakening of the masses
and the movement of uninstructed people towards the Christian faith; the revived church by many or few is moved to engage in evangelism and demonstrate social action.
All I can say is a loud AMEN to that. Help us to be prepared to catch the next and perhaps the greatest of all the waves of church history combined before the second coming of our Messiah and Lord!
3) Little Keys Open Big Doors!
Those of you, who know me, know the following statement real well! Little keys open big doors! It really is not complicated - it is an issue of a hungry heart! But what are some of these little keys that have been used before and will be used again to help open the heavens over our homes, neighborhoods, congregations and cities?
Prayer Opens The Way!
Let me share a testimony with you from the Hebrides Island Revival right off the shores of Scotland in 1952. Two desperate women - Peggy & Christina Smith - 84 and 82 years old - were desperate for a revival. They began praying daily from Isaiah 44:3, “For I will pour out water on the thirsty land and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring, and My blessing on your descendants.”
They reminded God of His word. Then they began to claim Isaiah 64:1, “O that Thou wouldst rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains might quake at Thy presence . . .” The oldest sister was blind, but even in this state she received a vision and proclaimed, “He’s coming! He’s coming! He’s already here!” Christina wrote the word from the Lord down and they proceeded to get the word to their minister.
That same night, the Spirit of God fell in a barn where seven young men were praying from Isaiah 62:6,7 where it tells us, “On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have appointed watchmen; All day and all night they will never keep silent. You who remind the Lord, take no rest for yourselves; and give Him no rest until He establishes and makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.” Sure enough God came. But He first came in His manifested presence to a group of young teenage boys in a barn!
This began the great Hebrides Revival, which then came under the stewardship and preaching of evangelist Duncan Campbell. A spiritual radiation zone of conviction of spirit was created five miles in diameter and many souls came to the Lord! But the doorkeepers of that “new beginning” were not professional clergy - they were two elderly ladies who reminded God of His word!
Prayer was the key that used to open heavens big doors in 1952. Perhaps there are some Peggy and Christine’s out there today. I have a word for you, “Keep on knocking on heavens doors!” Put in those keys in Jesus name!
The Key of the Prophetic
Another key that has often been used is the key of the word of the Lord. Today we often refer to this as “the prophetic.” The prophetic becomes a powerful tool to open closed minds, closed doors and closed situations. Seek God, get His word, put the key in the door and turn it!
We need a return of “Thus saith the Lord”. We need the voice of God that thunders from heaven to earth to break things open. When you hear His voice, it produces faith in the hearer. Then all things are made possible to them who believe. Read the following scriptures and get inspired to call forth the key of the prophetic in your life and city.
1. Deut. 8:3 - man lives by God’s Word.
2. Matt. 4:4 - by every Word that keeps proceeding.
3. Eph. 6:17 - the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
4. Luke. 11:52 - we must use the key and not hinder others.
The Key of His Presence
We need His presence more than anything in this life! The one outstanding distinguishing characteristic of God’s people is to be His presence among us! It is not as much what denomination you are or what type of faddish clothing you wear. His outstanding characteristic is to be “Emanuel” - “God with us!”
In Exodus 33:12-23, God gave Moses and invitation to step closer into His view. Moses gave his request that God’s presence would go with him; he and His people. Thus God revealed a measure of His glorious Presence to him. Do you not want the same? Is this not what it will take for a City to Be on It’s Knees?
Exodus 25:30 gives us another glimpse into this key of His presence. The fourth station in Moses Tabernacle is the place where the priest would lay out the bread of His Presence (or showbread). We need our daily bread! We need to eat of this bread at this table in an on going manner. I ask you again, “How hungry are you?” Do you hunger for His presence more than anything in this life?
4) When We Care For His Presence
In rounding out this chapter, I want to tell you a dream that has gripped my soul. In January, 1999 the Lord visited me with a piercing dream that is helping to set my course of direction right now and I believe is a clear word to His people.
In this dream, I was holding long loaves of bread each wrapped in their own individual napkin. I was holding these loaves of bread close to my chest right over my heart. Then I got our youngest child's (Rachel's) blanket that she has had since birth. I now wrapped these loaves of bread in her dear baby blanket. I held the bread close to my heart and just kind of rocked the bread as you would a newborn child.
Then I heard the words, "When My people will care for, cherish, nurture and love the "Bread of My Presence" like a parent does its new born child - then revival will come." I then found myself awakened out of the dream only to find my arms were held out as though holding and rocking something. I then heard myself prophesying out loud in the bedroom the same words I had just heard in the dream as the sweet presence of the Holy Spirit was lingering over my body. The Lord was emphasizing these words by having them be repeated twice!
This I know - He wants us to cherish, care for and love His Presence. Pray for His presence. Nurture His presence - after all - isn't this what you have longed for all your life? Isn't this what you were made and created for - to be a carrier of most brilliant presence?! Isn't this the answer to the church’s cry for help? Isn’t this how we catch the next wave?
When will revival come? You got it! When we get up in the middle of the night - do the night feedings, hold the child close to our bosom and wash the child of new beginnings with love and compassion - then revival will come! Let His Presence come forth!
Now I could give you a whole bunch of technical points. But what I want to do is point you to the Heart of God Himself. Remember, the depth of your hunger is the length of your reach to God! Want to catch the next wave of revival, the next move of God in the earth today? Then cherish His presence - then revival will have already come!
