1) GOD’S OWN POSSESSION
Over the years a controversy has arisen. Can a Christian be possessed by a spirit? The problem is – we have been asking the question about the wrong spirit. We are called to be POSSESSED by the Holy Spirit of God!
A) Primary Verse:
I Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has claimed you out of darkness into His marvelous light."
We are not our own - we have been bought with the price of the blood of Jesus. God owns us! B) Experiential Statements from Leaders
From the Life of Rodney Howard Browne - South African Evangelist and Revival Leader to the United States
“Those whom God is using today is not because they are anyone special - but because they have touched God and God has touched them.”
From the Life of Charles Finney - American Evangelist of the 1800’s
“As dusk darkened his law office and the Judge bid him good night, Charles was Spirit-driven into the back room to pray. Few records of conversions and Spirit-baptisms equal the experience he was about to go through on wings of joy as he entered the rear room. Let’s go into that inner sanctuary through his own description: “There was . . . no light in the room; nevertheless it appeared to me as if it were perfectly light. As I went in and shut the door . . . it seemed as if I met the Lord Jesus Christ face to face . . ., as I would see any other man. He said nothing, but looked at me in such a manner as to break me right down at His feet . . . it seemed to me a reality that He stood before me and I fell down at His feet and poured out my soul to Him. I wept like a child . . . I bathed His feet with my tears.”
This state continued for some time yet Mr. Finney could recollect nothing he said, but when he broke the interview, as he calls it, and returned to the inner office the fire had long since burned down. Nor was the surcharging of his soul with a mighty baptism completed. He goes on to describe the after-effects of meeting Christ face to face:
“But as I turned and was about to take a seat by the fire I received a mighty baptism of the Holy Ghost. Without expecting it . . . the Holy Spirit descended upon me in a manner that seemed to go through me body and soul. I could feel the impression like a wave of electricity going through and through me. Indeed it seemed to come in waves and waves of liquid love . . . like the very breath of God . . . it seemed to fan me like immense wings. No words can express the wonderful love that was shed abroad in my heart. I wept aloud with joy and love; and . . . I bellowed out the unutterable gushings of my heart. These waves came over me and over me and over me one after the other until I recollect I cried out, ‘I shall die if these waves continue to pass over me . . . Lord, I cannot bear any more.’”
2) ENCOUNTERS IN MY PERSONAL LIFE
The following are some of the personal encounters I have had with the Lord and with His precious servants that have helped me to comprehend this link between being “possessed by God” and bringing heaven down to earth.
A) Evan Roberts - Welsh Intercessor and Revivalist
In 1998 I was privileged to be a part of a team that ministered on site at Moriah Chapel in southern Wales where the historic revival under young Evan Roberts’ leadership took place in 1904. That day a carpenter was working in his attic and a secular newspaper from 1904 fell out of the wall. It’s headline read, “Robert’s Soul in Travail”. It told how the Holy Spirit took control of Evan and seized him with the burden for the lost souls. The carpenter brought the newspaper to the meeting that night and showed it to us. What was Roberts’ key? He was possessed by God with the spirit of prayer for lost souls.
B) A Vision of the Stairs to Heaven
While at a conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, I was given a visionary experience of a staircase leading up into heaven. In this “interactive vision”, I was invited to come up higher into His presence. As I climbed the stairs, the higher I ascended, the more
I was enveloped in a beautiful white mist with brilliant white light shining all around. Eventually I came to a plateau where there was only piercing white light penetrating my entire being. I began to sob and cry out as the light of God saturated me, “You’re beautiful! You’re beautiful! You’re beautiful!”
That day I encountered another level of His majesty. I thought, “How could you hold anything back from this God of love!” He knew all my faults, yet totally loved me! I was consumed with the revelation of His transcendent majesty! C) A Personal Appointment with Samuel Howells
Many dedicated intercessors have devoured the book Rees Howells The Intercessor. In 1998, I was tremendously privileged to have a personal appointment with Rees Howells’ son Samuel who at the time was 86 years of age. He has since graduated to his heavenly reward. I asked him, “How did your father receive the revelation of what to pray for when during the time of WWII?” Mr. Samuels would answer any of my questions except for that one.
After pleading with him for a fourth time, he solemnly answered me. “You must understand, the Lord’s servant was possessed by God!”
That response answered all my questions that day. I did not ask another question. How does revelation come? How does authority over darkness come? How do breakthroughs occur? The answer was clear!
“You must understand, the Lord’s servants must be possessed by God!”
D) Gideon’s Reward - Read Judges 6:34
In the fall of 1993, the Lord permitted me to have 3 months where I spent 4 - 6 hours a day praying in the gift of tongues. After this I was ministering at an intercessory conference in Canada. While there, a friend and I fell into travail on the floor. While deep in intercession, the Holy Spirit said to me, “Read Judges 6:34 from the Amplified Bible”. I turned and looked and under the seat next to me and there was my wife’s Amplified Bible.
It read, “And the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon, clothed him with Himself and took possession of him.” Another key of confirmation was being given to me - this was God’s way. Gideon’s reward for tearing down the high places was that the Lord took “possession of him.”
May He come upon us and take possession of us as well!
3) SOMEBODY JUST REACH OUT AND GRAB HIM!
A) Hunger Draws God’s Presence!
New York City Experience -
One time while ministering in New York City to a group of church leaders, I could feel the presence of Jesus drawing near. Then my eyes were opened for a bit and I could see a glimpse of His feet walking among the people. Those in the room almost seemed oblivious to His manifested presence. I became desperate for them. I wanted to shake them out of their seemingly passivity. I exhorted them, “Somebody just reach out and grab Him!”
In 1992, my wife, Michal Ann, was visited by the manifested presence for around nine weeks in our home. His presence would draw so near and she would think she could take no more. But she learned to ask for more! She determined that whether she lived or died - that did not matter! She would continue to cry out to the Lord for Him to draw near and He would come to her in the night season in gentle and very demonstrative ways. The Call - Where Is Blind Bartimaeus?
Read Mark 10: 46 - 52 for the background for this last exhortation. As it was with blind Bartimaeus, so the Lord is looking today for a hungry people who will not hold back but cry out with all their heart, “Have mercy on me Son of David!”
We must learn to cast off the cloak of intimidation and all those things that hold us back (vs. 50) and arise and come to Jesus. Yes, He will give us our sight and take possession of us!

You are probably aware that I am on a 90 Day sabbatical beginning July 1 and going through September 30, 2006. This is to give me the much needed time to work on my health and reoccurring battle with non- hodgkins lymphoma cancer. I must get well and I need your continued prayers to help me get there.
