Right click to download: Becoming a Father Pleaser, Part 2

This message was captured at the Secret Place Gathering 2009 in Nashville, TN. Bob Mumford shares the message of Becoming a Father Pleaser! This message is a timely and needed teaching in this hour. John 8:35 - Now a slave does not remain in a household permanently (forever); the son [of the house] does remain forever.

The term Father-Pleaser should be understood in governmental context and, consequently, defined as: A person whose ultimate desire and purpose is to preserve and maximize the sense of Father’s manifest Presence and approval to walk in His favor at all times and under all circumstances. His Reward: In You, I am well-pleased!

PART 2

John 8:29
And He Who sent Me is ever with Me; My Father has not left Me alone, for I always do what pleases Him.

1) Pleasing in all forms used some 33 times in the Bible.
2) Well-pleasing in all forms used 42 times in the Bible.
3) Note its preface to 30-36:

John 8:30-36
30 - As He said these things, many believed in Him [trusted, relied on, and adhered to Him]. 31 - So Jesus said to those Jews who had believed in Him, If you abide in My word [hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them], you are truly My disciples. 32 - And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free. 33 - They answered Him, We are Abraham’s offspring (descendants) and have never been in bondage to anybody. What do You mean by saying, You will be set free? 34 - Jesus answered them, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, Whoever commits and practices sin is the slave of sin. 35 - Now a slave does not remain in a household permanently (forever); the son [of the house] does remain forever. 36 - So if the Son liberates you [makes you free men], then you are really and unquestionably free.

Disruptive Kingdom

All seven changes are, in my understanding of Father-God and His Government, are designed to be:

  • Inflammatory: disrupting dogmatism, idealism, materialism, and skepticism
  • Reformational: intentional re-forming the Church on earth
  • Transitional: unmanageable and disorderly organizational change
  • Inexorable: unpreventable and uninvited coming of the Kingdom

Seven Changes

1. Change from living under His Sovereignty to knowing Him as Father in a Providential manner.

Providence disrupts self-validation.

An intentional and uncompromising change in my relationship with God as a Father, from living under His Sovereignty to a clear and existential reality of knowing Him as Father in a Providential manner. As we have stated, this includes a full embrace of His freedom to use All Things to conform us to the Image of His Son. Providence disrupts self-validation.

2. Change from titles and office to sonship.

“I looked at Him, He looked at me and we were one forever.” Spurgeon

Father and I are One…

Change from living out of office and title to that of Sonship. When we have grasped Fatherhood, titles and offices lose their charm and authority. While titles are often useful; we will, increasingly, find our authority and confidence increasing by intentionally becoming ‘One with the Father’ as stated in John 10:30. Biblical use of all titles and offices should bring us to oneness with the Father. Spurgeon: “I looked at Him, He looked at me and we were one forever”.

3. Change from legal/religious use of Scriptures to pleasing the Father.

How would God as a Father respond?

This pleasure is fully demonstrated in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ.

A necessary change from legal, argumentative and religious use of ‘the Scriptures’ and “What the Word of God says…” to a more human, love-filled and Christ-centered application of what really does or does not please the Father. We may discover a useful insight into this change by the use of the term: Father-Pleaser. How would God as a Father, operating in His Providential manner; within His limitless Forgiveness in Christ and unlimited affection, handle this particular failure or disappointment? This pleasure is fully demonstrated in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ.

4. Transformation of our motives for ministry.

Possess, acquire, control

From taker to giver

An intentional, life-changing transformation of our motives for ministry. The world sees the present-day Church as a “Taker”. We must conduct ourselves and give evidence that we, like our Master, are givers and not takers. Consider the implications of the following three words: possess, acquire and control. God is a giver. Christ is a giver. His Children must become givers and not takers.

5. Change in objective

Saving souls to becoming sons

Re-examination of ‘Getting to Heaven’ as compared to Kingdom Purpose.

A dramatic change in our objective. Each of us has been trained to ‘get souls saved and get them ready for heaven’. Paul, however, states the objective in quite a different manner. Speaking in light of the Coming Kingdom of Glory, he says:

Romans 8:19-21

For [even the whole] creation (all nature) waits expectantly and longs earnestly for God’s sons to be made known [waits for the revealing, the disclosing of their sonship]. For the creation (nature) was subjected to frailty (to futility, condemned to frustration), not because of some intentional fault on its part, but by the will of Him Who so subjected it—[yet] with the hope that nature (creation) itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and corruption [and gain an entrance] into the glorious freedom of God’s children.

6. Measurable disruption in doctrine

The Kingdom expects inclusivity, not doctrinal exclusivity.

You search the Scriptures… and you will not come to Me.

Due to the dramatic and unexpected intrusion of the Kingdom of God, there is a measurable disruption in the sphere of biblical concepts of Doctrine. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, as the result of years in a Nazi Prison, asked for ‘religion-less Christianity’. He could see that we were entering a sphere of global inclusion that would minimize and, perhaps, trivialize the immature doctrines to which we cling. The Kingdom of God asks for and expects us to ‘Walk in Agape…’ as compared to walking in narrow doctrinal and denominational distinctives. The Kingdom expects inclusivity as compared to doctrinal exclusivity. Illustrated in the Three Wise Men.

7. Change in unfolding eschatology

Five transitional persons: Adam, Abraham, Moses, Christ, and the One New Man

“Christ in you (plural) the hope of Glory.”

A revolutionary unfolding of eschatology which will precipitate change and an expanded understanding of our concepts of the “Last days”. There are, scripturally, five transitional persons: Adam; Abraham; Moses, Christ and the fifth one, is a corporate person with whom we are unfamiliar and find ourselves rather uncomfortable in embracing. That fifth transitional person is called the One New Man. Hope, Paul says is “Christ in you (Plural) which is the Hope of Glory”, i.e., the Kingdom of Glory revealed in the earth.

Suppose He is now ready to transform 1.5 Billion into One New Man. Coming in His Saints before He comes for His Saints.

Revelation 11:17

Exclaiming, to You we give thanks, Lord God Omnipotent, [the One] Who is and [ever] was, for assuming the high sovereignty and the great power that are Yours and for beginning to reign.
