Concerning Temptation Part II

1) Basic Truths About Temptation

The following point is a brief review of Part 1 that we released in the last Vision Cast. We will build upon those principles to ensure that we have a solid foundation.

1. Five Foundational Truths Concerning Temptation

2. Satan Especially Likes to Tempt Us When . . .
   
   
• When our faith is young
• When we think we are invulnerable to sin.
• When we are in an alien environment.
• When our faith is being tested in the fires of affliction.
• Immediately following great spiritual highs and lows.
• Perhaps Satan’s most effective weapon is to put his thoughts into our minds and then blame us for having them.
• A related tactic is for the enemy to disguise his accusations as if they were from the Holy Spirit.
  
  
3. When Too Much of a Good Thing – Becomes a License for Licentiousness
   
• Satan’s tactic is to entice us to push something good beyond the boundary of the will of God until it becomes sin. He treats us like the proverbial frog in the pool of water; gradually turning up the heat of temptation, hoping we don’t notice that we are approaching the boundary of God’s will, and jump out before something good becomes sin. When those boundaries are erased, then the devil typically moves on to other expressions and temptations that previously we would not have even considered.
  

2) Tactics for Resisting Temptation

The following are eight basic tactics that each believer in Christ Jesus must apply in order to overcome the enemy of temptation.

1. Know yourself. Ask questions like, "If I were the devil, how would I attack me?"
   
2. Confront and conquer temptation at the beginning, not at the end.
   
3. Pray preventative prayers (Mt. 6:13). We must remember that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
   
4. Pray protective prayers (Mt. 26:41). Let us keep in place the Laws of prudence. We must have our proper “walls and boundaries” in place (Proverbs 16:32, 25:28).
   
5. Flee (I Cor. 6:18; 10:14; I Tim. 6:11; II Tim. 2:22).
   
6. Utilize scripture (Mt. 4:1-11; Luke. 4).
   
7. Resist (James. 4:7).
   
8. Be accountable to others (James. 5:16).

3) The Three Channels of Temptation

Why do we entertain tempting thoughts which are contrary to God’s Word and God’s Will? Let’s face it - because we want to! We are not tempted to over eat foods we don’t like - or by unattractive members of the opposite sex, or even unwanted promotions. Temptation’s hook is the Devil’s guarantee that we think we want and need something outside of God’s will to satisfy us. This is the age-old pattern found in 1 John 2:15 -17. The three channels of temptation are:

1. Lust of the flesh - preys on our physical senses.
   
2. Lust of the eyes - appeals to self-interest and tests the word of God.
   
3. Pride of life - stresses self-promotion and self-exaltation.
   
   
   

4) Feed Yourself the Right Things

God’s will does satisfy us! Don’t believe or accept the devil’s lie! You never can satisfy the desires of the flesh. Instead, feed yourself the right thing.

Yes, instead, ‘Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied’ (Matt. 5:6). Only sustaining right relationships, living by the power of the Holy Spirit, and experiencing the Fruit of the Spirit will satisfy you.

It is not enough to starve out the bad influences. You must fill the void with God’s medicine of an abundant life full of God and satisfied in a loving community of healthy relationships. Feed yourself the right things and you will overcome the temptations for the illegal. God’s Word, His Will and His Ways always triumph in the end!
