From the Desk of James W. Goll

This week we are going to pray into an issue that has existed for a long time but is a rapidly growing international crisis – Sex Slavery & the Sex Trade Industry. Thank you for praying for Reformation in the World Health Care System this past week. We must continue to lift these issues before the Lord and believe that “every prayer counts.” So, once again, no matter what nation you live in, adjust the write up below and pray for redemption to come in the midst of one of the darkest webs of satan’s influence in the earth today.

Continue to intercede for me as I receive the remaining treatment at the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Zion, Illinois. I return home this Thursday, August 27th, 2009. You might add fasting on one day this week while I complete my time here at the CTOA. Would you consider doing that for me? I will release a Health Update later this week.

Thanks to all of you who have partnered thus far with us as one of our 1,000 Partners each giving a one-time gift of $100 over these ten weeks of treatment and recovery on August 7th – October 9th. If you would like to donate please click here. We are also so honored to announce that there will be a Worship Benefit Belmont Church in Nashville, TN on Tuesday evening September 8th from 7 – 9 PM with Michael W. Smith, Ricky Skaggs and Don Potter. Spread the word about this wonderful time of worship!

Let others know about PrayerStorm – the hour that changes the world. Let’s see these global prayer efforts grow into every nation of the earth! Pass our free web casts and MP3 downloads on to others as well!

Blessings to Each of You!

Breaking the Back of Sex Slavery
& the Sex Trade Industry

In her lst book Compassion ~ A CALL TO TAKE ACTION Michal Ann Goll shares a brief history concerning William and Catherine Booth, founders of the Salvation Army. The opening quote from chapter 3 is this:

What can we do to wake the Church up? Too often those who have its destinies in the palm of their hands are chiefly chosen from those who are mere encyclopedias of the past rather than from those who are distinguished by their possession of Divine Power. For leadership of the Church something more is required.' Catherine Booth, 1829-1890

What can we do to wake up the church? What a powerful question! One of the best ways is to show the world as it is, not through the rose colored glasses through which we (the church especially in the west) often see the world. Even in developed countries with great mass media structures the truth and reality of much of the world is seldom made known!

For example, if five years ago you had told me that human beings were being traded across international borders as sex slaves and sold or forced into prostitution, I would have had a difficult time believing that this could happen in North America, Europe and Asia. In my mind there was no way that a human life could be trafficked liked a piece of livestock in the USA. We have seen a (Civil) war over freeing people from a life of slavery and oppresion.

Earlier this year Holy Spirit began to stir on me concerning the exploited women of the world and in particuliar India, so I began to to do research into compassion ministries and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO). Also I began to see TV shows that featured NGO's meeting these needs. One of these programs was Sex Workers or Victims hosted by Lisa Ling on the Oxegyn channel and the second one was Slaves Girls of India also hosted by Lisa Ling.

Then spending some time on the internet I found the IAST.net website (Initiative Against Sexual Trafficking). This is their opening statment:

We exist to create and equip a new abolition movement for the eradication of sexual trafficking, the protection of survivors, and the prosecution of traffickers and exploiters.

The global phenomenon of sexual trafficking involves the recruitment, transportation, harboring, provision, or obtaining of persons for purposes of prostitution or other forms of commercial sexual exploitation such as the production of pornography, nude dancing, or live sex shows. Prostitution and related activities, which are inherently harmful and dehumanizing, significantly contribute to the phenomenon of sex trafficking.

Each year sexual traffickers lure, coerce, trick, drug, kidnap, and sell millions of vulnerable women and children into the multi-billion dollar sex trade. In their daily lives victims of sexual trafficking endure unspeakable acts of physical brutality, violence and degradation including rape by so-called customers and pimps; undergo forced abortions; acquire drug and alcohol dependencies; live in fear of their lives and in fear for the lives of their family and friends; suffer acute psychological reactions as a result of their extreme physical and emotional trauma; and contract sexually transmitted diseases which all too often bring life-long illness or hasten death. If they survive, the physical, psychological and spiritual impacts of these experiences on victims are devastating and enduring.

c/o The Salvation Army National

I saw "c/o The Salvation Army National" and remember various talks I had with Michal Ann about William and Catherine Booth. As I began to follow the internet trail I found how the Salvation Army became to be involved with the "Modern Abolition Moment":

Mrs Josephine Butler was the wife of a scholarly Anglican clergyman and one of the noblest and most heroic English women of her time. In the 1880’s she risked wild and brutal opposition on a vigorous crusade to change laws which were grossly unfair to women and resulted in many young girls being trafficked for sex. When The Salvation Army began it’s battle on behalf of the younger section of the country’s womanhood, Mrs Josephine Butler saw the Army as her answer to prayer and wrote to Mrs. Bramwell Booth saying

Nothing but a mighty spiritual power permeating a well considered, wisely organised scheme, will prevail against this passion in men to subdue armies of women for the service of lust; and in The Salvation Army is that wonderful spiritual power.

She saw the Army as an answer to prayer. However, it was not until some time later when one of these unfortunate girls was found early one morning curled on the steps of 101, desperately seeking help and refuge from the brothel in which she had been enslaved, that Bramwell Booth was stirred to take bold action. The story of 'Britain’s Maiden Tribute' and the important role the Army played is well known but it is worth noting that the strategy in dealing with the evil was to use friends and influential supporters of the Army including the press to gather evidence, publishing and shaming the monsters perpetrating the trade and being prepared to lobby, petition and ultimately suffer imprisonment to change the law. The effects and influence of this action has had far reaching impact upon the rights of women and children to this very day. (Click here for the remainder of this Salvation Army article.)

There are literally scores of organizations who are battling this giant in the land and we honor all of their sacrifices and commitment. As a token of these organizations, we have highlighted the Salvation Army's efforts as one of the first historically to address these issues governmentally. May many more men and women of faith pick up the torch in this hour to bring change to these issues. Let's join our prayers to these efforts.

Below I want to offer sites, articles and reports that will open your eyes to the depth of this issue, Sex Slaves and the Sex Trade Industry...

Girls 'sold' for lobola
June 3, 2009
by Keith Ross

Outrage has been expressed by many community leaders and politicians (in South Africa) about the re-emergence in parts of the country of "ukuthwala" - the practice of forcing girls, some as young as 12, to marry older men.

The girls are often abducted and in some cases have been forced into unions with men believed to be HIV positive.

In many cases they are "sold" by parents who are in dire economic straits and are tempted by the lobola - the bride price - offered by the man.

Ukuthwala was a long-established customary practice, which appeared to be dying out, but has re-emerged strongly in various parts of the country, especially in the Eastern Cape.

INDONESIA: Trafficking fuels commercial sex work
SURABAYA, 3 June 2009 (IRIN) -

Among the alleyways of Dolly, in Indonesia's second-largest city, it is not difficult to find thousands of young women lured by the prospects of a better life working as commercial sex workers (CSWs).

"I never chose to be a prostitute. It just happened," Isah, 19, told IRIN, describing her tenure in one of Southeast Asia's largest commercial sex venues.

Married and divorced by 17, Isah was easy prey for traffickers, who promised her a well-paid job in the city.

"After my divorce, there was no way I could return to my family. I had to escape," she said, only to find herself servicing up to eight men a night for about US$30 per day.

Such stories are common in East Java, Indonesia's most populous province, particularly in rural areas, with thousands of women being trafficked both internally and abroad for prostitution.

Subject: India: Fading Traditions

Dear Friends:

Below is a brief summary about a very compelling in-depth radio broadcast on the subject of devadasi prostitution in India. To listen to the full broadcast follow this link (http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/documentaries/2008/02/080129_fading_traditions_three.shtml) and then click "Listen to the Programme."

For those unfamiliar with devadasi prostitution, it entails the dedication of young girls to the gods/goddesses of Hindu temples. Among their duties the girls must provide sex to patrons of the temple. The report exposes how exploited and trapped many devadasi's feel.

Tragically, the women who are interviewed were dedicated to the temples as children. Thus, they grow up being sexually abused. This doesn't make them "sex workers" as the commentator labels them, but adult victims of serial childhood sexual abuse and exploitation. Because they have never had the opportunity to receive an education or learn other livelihood skills, devadasis remain trapped in the sex trade as adults.

The commentator in the broadcast links devadasi prostitution with the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS. Of course, this is a risk, but I think it's sad that it takes the AIDS epidemic to raise concern about the plight of these women and girls. After all, we're talking about a system of ritualized sexual abuse of children. What about all the harms of being sexually abused as a child? What about all the other possible STDS? What about the violence, shame and stigma associated with being involved in the sex trade?

Sadly, the report also fails to make any connection to the demand for commercial sex created by male buyers. As long as society continues legitimize a supposed male right to buy sexual access to women on demand, there will always be institutionalized ways to supply women and girls to meet that demand.

Abolition!

Shared Hope International’s Report on

Child Sexual Slavery in America

In 2006 Shared Hope International received a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to perform field research on Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking (DMST)—the sex trafficking of American children. The National Report is the culmination of ten field assessments conducted in targeted locations in the United States, providing a comprehensive understanding of child sex trafficking across America.  This unprecedented report reveals the starling reality that American children are being recruited from our neighborhoods and sold on our streets!

The National Report found misidentification of victims to be the primary barrier to properly addressing America’s trafficked children. Consequently, this misidentification often leads to the criminalization of victims, barring them from receiving proper treatment and care. In fact, in nearly every location American child victims of sex trafficking are being arrested for the crime committed against them while their abusers walk free.  In addition, the study found a severe lack of appropriate protective and therapeutic shelters. Finally, the National Report emphasizes that although buyers are a critical in addressing the issue of child sex trafficking, buyers most often escape criminalization.

The World Evangelical Alliance (WEA)
creates a taskforce on human trafficking.

The World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) has recently created a taskforce on human trafficking in an effort to raise awareness across the WEA community that represents 420 million evangelical Christians worldwide. The taskforce, headed by the WEA spokesperson on human trafficking Commissioner Christine MacMillan, aims to prevent and combat trafficking by dev
eloping strategic and effective actions and tools that will help equip the local churches and their leaders to become responsive to the victims of human trafficking.

"The taskforce by conviction has the potential to develop skills of awareness for the WEA constituency of national alliances that represent 420 million. Looking at the atrocity of Human Trafficking may invoke lament where, tears flow like a river day and night. (Lamentations 2:18a) Perhaps the taskforce is to release tears in God's church as the door to which we produce strategic interventions of determination", Commissioner MacMillan said.

RIGHTS-PARAGUAY:

NGO Offers Girls a Way Out of Sexual Exploitation

Natalia Ruiz Díaz

ASUNCIÓN, Aug 17 (IPS) - Claudia was 13 years old when she came to the capital of Paraguay from her small rural town. Just a few weeks after her arrival she was wandering the streets of downtown Asunción, a victim of sexual exploitation.

Her story replicates that of so many other girls and adolescents who every day fall into the clutches of child sex trade rings in Paraguay, one of the countries of Latin America where this heinous crime most flourishes.

Claudia* had left behind a broken and poverty-stricken family, encouraged by her older sister who was already living in Asunción. But her hopes for a better life vanished quickly and, as she found herself penniless and unprotected, she took to working the streets.

That was where she was found by Luna Nueva (New Moon), a non-governmental organisation that runs a comprehensive care programme for girls and adolescents victims of sexual exploitation, working both from its La Casa centre and through outreach activities conducted in the streets and brothels of Asunción.

White Ribbon Against Por--graphy Week (WRAP) is intended to educate the public about the extent of our culture's por--graphy problem. WRAP week creates a useful opportunity for clergy and others to raise the issue of por--graphy within the Church, and to call all Christians to renewed lives of sexual purity.

See the flyer for ways you can help raise awareness about the devastating influences of por--graphy during WRAP week and throughout the year.

Abolition!

Lisa (P.S. In case you are wondering, I sometimes delete letters from certain words to help these emails get by email filters.)

There are truly dozens more articles and reports covering this tragic epidemic destroying women, children, and even infants. However, I want to leave you with a quote from Compassion ~ A CALL TO TAKE ACTION taken from the life of the American evangelist Dwight L. Moody, who ministered in Chicago in the late 1880's.

Moody said that the world had yet to see what would happen when one man gave his life unreservedly to the Lord, and he said he intended to be that man.

So let's pray that these men and women of God will rise up and be given fully & unreservedly to the Lord. Pray that the world will see the manifest Sons and Daughters of God change the face of the earth for His Glory!

Will you be that man or women of God?
