PRAYER STORM – WHAT IS IT?

As I looked, behold, a stormy wind came out of the north, and a great cloud with a fire enveloping it and flashing continually; a brightness was about it and out of the midst of it there seemed to glow amber metal, out of the midst of the fire. (Ezek. 1:4, Amp)

When I woke up from the commissioning dream about the Moravian Lampstand and I saw the glowing, amber words, Prayer Storm , emblazoned in front of my eyes, not only did I understand instantly that God wanted me to orchestrate a move of prayer, I also knew that “storm” would be a key word—and an actual experience—all the way through.

The “prayer” part was not a new idea. Dictionary definitions concur that prayer is an earnest, heartfelt request made before God (or a godlike authority). But, the definition of a “storm” gets more interesting.

What is a storm? A natural storm involves a disturbance in the air above the earth. It includes strong winds, sometimes lightening and thunder, and often some form of precipitation, such as rain, snow, sleet, or hail. Already this makes me think of a number of Scriptures that paint a vivid picture of God’s power sweeping down on the earth. Turn the page back to Job 37:2–5, at the end of the introduction, and then look below at a few more:

See, the storm of the Lord will burst out in wrath, a whirlwind swirling down on the heads of the wicked. The anger of the Lord will not turn back until he fully accomplishes the purposes of his heart. In days to come you will understand it clearly. (Jer. 23:19–20, niv)

Like fire that burns the forest, and like a flame that sets the mountains on fire, so pursue them with Your tempest and terrify them with Your storm. (Ps. 83:14–15, nas)

The Lord is slow to anger and great in power; the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished. His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and clouds are the dust of his feet. (Nah. 1:3, niv)

He covers His hands with the lightning, And commands it to strike the mark. (Job 36:32, nas)

God not only commands natural storms on the earth, He is a storm. And by extension, since we have been created in His image and commissioned as His servants and adopted as sons, we are like storms too, when we are acting in His name. That last passage (Job 36:32) says that He covers His hands with lightening and sends it forth to strike the mark. When we pray to Him, we’re calling forth the storm of God to invade the earth realm. We’re drawing His attention to a particular “mark” or target.

We can’t see the spiritual storm that rages in mid-heaven, although it is spoken about in the Bible. (See Daniel 7–9, for example.) God is looking for people to join their voices in prayer so that He can release the angelic host to do battle all the more. He wants to hear the prayers of people on earth so that He can release the winds of His Spirit and the rain of His justice.

A storm of prayer releases a storm of power. A prayer storm, to pull out some more dictionary definitions of “storm,” does not have to be compared only with weather terminology. You can have other kinds of storms: a storm of anger or a storm of protest; or a storm of the opposite emotion, such as a storm of laughter; a storm or bombardment of objects, a storm or torrent of communications, even a storm window (we could play with that one!). When we use the word “storm” as a verb, we talk about military-type storming of a fortified location, often suddenly and with great force, in order to attack and capture it. We speak of storming out of a room with violent anger, pushing forward like a thunderhead driven before the wind. We also, of course, say it is “storming” when the sky is dark and lightening flashes and the wind blows, driving rain or snow before it.

So what is a Prayer Storm? A prayer storm is when people cry out, not quietly but in a verbally passionate way, asking God, in the name of Jesus, to change things. We are calling forth the strong winds of the Spirit and the glorious flashings of His brilliant Presence. We want Him to shatter the darkness with His light. We are holding up targets for Him to aim at. “Come, Lord! Come here to my city. Storm the gates! Blow us out of our comfortable traditions. Break off our blinders. Strike our enemies and win us for Yourself....”

Maputo, Mozambique

Dear Friends in Prayer,

I would like to enlist your prayers for my Mozambican brothers and sisters as they go forward with plans for a solemn assembly in the capital of Maputo on Saturday, September 24th.  There has been a period of 40 days of fasting and prayer preparing the way. They have divided themselves into fasting teams to have a team fasting every single day to cover the 40 days, and they will be doing various prayer vigils and prayer training throughout the city to prepare leading up to the solemn assembly. I am so grateful to the Lord that the work is going forward.

The solemn assembly is being held around the 25th anniversary of a stadium meeting held by Samora Machel, the first president of Mozambique.  He was an atheist and a communist and he and his regime shed much blood in the nation and persecuted the Church. In September of 1986 he gathered the people in a stadium in Maputo and dared God to strike him dead and counted to ten with a stop-watch. When nothing happened he declared over the nation that God doesn't exist and that Mozambique does not believe in God. A month later he died in a plane crash, but his shadow remains over the nation. Please join with the believers in the city of Maputo as they gather in a main plaza in the city center to fast and pray, declare their faith in Jesus Christ and exalt His name over the city.

Please pray for Mozambique House of Prayer as they prepare the prayer and repentance focuses for this day, especially praying for leaders of THE CALL Maputo.  After the solemn assembly there will be a city-wide evangelistic outreach. This is truly encouraging to our heart.   Praise the Lord for His glory and refining in our lives.
